As soon as you get to your seat for a dinner party, make sure to take the napkin off your plate and place it on your lap as you sit down. And if you have to leave the dinner table at any point during the meal, you should leave the napkin unfolded on your chair and never on the table.

2 Seating

Sit at a comfy distance away from the table,so that your hands are level with it when your elbows are bent. Never let your elbows rest on the table. Posture is also key, so try to sit up straight and keep your hands in your lap when not eating.

It is standard that you should never actually start eating until everyone’s been served their food unless the host really urges you to tuck in. Before you finally start eating, it’s also good form to ask if you can pass anything to anyone around the table.

After you’ve devoured the dinner, make sure to put down your knife and fork parallel at 90 degree or 135 degree angle on your plate. This is especially important in a restaurant setting as it signals to your waiter that you are done eating and that they may clean the table.

6 Compliment
